Jane Austen meets Fifty Shades in the Passion & Perseverance Trilogy. The series begins with First Impressions, a modern retelling of the classic, Pride and Prejudice. Beth Bennet is on top of the world. All of her hard work and dedication has finally paid off with her career in PR reaching new heights and marriage is the last thing on her mind. That is until her father decides to make some big changes in the family firm which puts William Darcy directly in her path, throwing off every well-laid plan she'd made. Challenging his control at every turn, will Beth be able to win him over before she loses control of herself? Darcy’s dark past has made him cold, controlling and completely irresistible. Yet, the only thing he can't seem to resist is Beth. Will he be able to relinquish his need for control for the sake of love? Or will his past and their families succeed in keeping them apart? The first in the Passion and Perseverance Trilogy, "First Impressions" is modern re-telling of the epic romance between Elizabeth Bennet and William Darcy, with a darkly sensual twist. In the 20th century, their tale becomes one of passion and persistence when two very independent people struggle to maintain control over their lives as a love they'd never planned on consumes them. **Edited and Updated Edition Released August 5th, 2017**

This modern variation veers little from the outline of canon. However, the author needs to proofread her text. (Yes, I know she is a physician, but this must have been a hurry up and get it done book as many errata are glaring at the reader.)

My second comment has to do with a warning: this is for MA only. There are at least three graphic descriptions of sex scenes and one involves spanking.

Darcy and Bingley come to town but this time it is as Bingley's law firm is considering absorbing the Bennet law firm. Darcy, as an investment banker, is along to advise his friend. They meet the Bennet family at the New York Bar Association Gala. Of course, no variation is complete without an insult having to do with how "tolerable" Beth Bennet is. She, however, in this story waits and then comes from around the colonnade from behind which she overheard him and lets him know in no uncertain terms how she did hear him and then gives him her comeback. But when he grabs her arm as she goes to leave...the sparks are not from their verbal interaction but a pure explosion of sexual attraction.

Beth Bennet is one of the top publicists at the Gardiner Group and has just landed the account of the DeBourgh Diamonds (...You know where this is going.) It turns out that Catherine deBourgh knows about Darcy being in town and the connection to the Bennet family so she "instructs" Beth to gather any and all news about Darcy. Beth is also told to make sure Catherine and her daughter, Anne, get invitations to the Longbourne’s Charity Ball. It is at this function that all that sexual tension finally reaches a climax.

But the morning after William is gone, (leaving a note) and then Beth learns that Charles Bingley, who seemed to be on the verge of proposing to Jane, has also left town and doesn't know when he will be back.

Again: we have Wickham, Char Lucas and her family and the five Bennet sisters. Bill Collins works at Longbourne Associates, John Bennet’s law firm and is a distant relative. But Collins' very strict and uncompromising personal and religious beliefs don't allow Mr. Bennet to even consider turning the firm over to him as Bennet is preparing to retire.

This was an interesting read. The William Darcy in this book seems so much more a man who wants to control everything and everyone and who offers NO explanations nor even a "please" when he wants something done. I wanted more development in the coming together of minds. There was more time and detail given to the bedroom interactions than discussion about likes, dislikes, hobbies, books read, family history, life goals, etc.

"Darcy was the first person to expect from her what she expected from herself." Where is this coming from? Has she had any conversation with him about goals? Has he made any comments about her achievements and/or lack of such?

There is a second book, Second Chances, following up on this book.

Very well written and excellent modern day twists...the sex scenes are very well done and makes you anticipate more! I can't wait for the sequel!)
...although that's certainly not a high bar to judge by. -)

What can I say? The characters are just as we love them, the storyline's original and the sex scenes are actually pleasant to read. And, yes, Christian Grey would be proud indeed.
Another fun read for the summer.
First impressions is a wonderful modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, I loved reading the new creative and suspenseful take on the characters and felt it still kept with the all the reasons we love Austen’s Pride and Prejudice- the draw, obstacles and passion between Darcy and Elizabeth. I am anxious to read the next book in the series
I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this story. As an all time lover of Jane Austen and romance novels, I love this funfic story, and the steamy scenes were oh so STEAMY!!!
Dr. RS actually exceeded my expectations by putting Mr Darcy into his very alpha self.

Big recommendation!
This was not a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. This was a 50 Shades knock-off with the main characters named after Elizabeth and Darcy. That's cool if that is your thing, but I found it disappointing. Darcy is socially awkward, a snob, even a bit of a cynical misanthrope, but Austen's Darcy is not the creep portrayed here. And though I heard many other characters tout what an excellent man he is, I saw very little evidence of it.

Even more problematic for me is the characterization of Elizabeth. <sigh> I am told she is a driven, intelligent PR professional nearing her 30s. What I was shown was a very weak woman who made immature choices and clearly only kept her job through nepotism because she seemed professionally incompetent. There was no trace of Austen's sharp, witty heroine in this character at all.

Though I mightily disliked the main characters and found nothing charming in either of them, I don't think Dr. Sharp is a poor writer. I did finish the book as opposed to moving on to the next title in my TBR pile. I would caution her to watch for mixing up her subject and object pronouns. Using the wrong one can be distracting to the reader.

All in all, it isn't the worst book I have read, but to me, it isn't a modern adaptation of P&P. I wish it had been marketed as a 50 Shades inspired book, or at the least, a 50 Shades/P&P mash-up. As it is, I will not be reading future books in the series unless the author sends me a message telling me that behind the locked door lurks Darcy's unicorn and teddy bear collection, and not his freaky S&M bondage sex chamber. That, I might read. ;)
While the story line follows the plot of the original--Mrs. Bennet is much as she is in canon, Jane is sweet and compassionate, Bingley is congenial but easily led, etc the main characters, Darcy and Beth, determine the story. Beth is something of a workaholic who defines herself by her job; Darcy is deeply intense with a cold mask of self control that is covering some deep pain, a pain deeper than the in canon loss of his parents. Both characters are used to focusing on work which serves to drive them and conceal something that lies beneath. This dynamic--who will control whom-- and the questions raised by Darcy's determined resolve to remain in control of the relationship, add interest and depth to this modern variation of P&P. As noted elsewhere, the "steamy scenes" are all that and more. This is a captivating read, one that I couldn't put down!
